Volvo renames the XC40 & C40 “Recharge” lineup, cranks up the power
The Swedish carmaker has renamed its all-electric XC40 Recharge to EX40 and the C40 Recharge to EC40, ditching the “Recharge” suffix. Both models are now available with a blackout trim package and a power kit for faster acceleration.
The cars now officially belong in the company’s main EV lineup that also includes the EX30, EX90 and EM90. Volvo reckons that it will be easier for customers to tell ICE cars from EVs now that all electric models have an index beginning with an “E”.
Opting for a package called Performance increases the output of the dual-motor powertrain by 34 PS (34 hp / 25 kW) for a total of 442 PS (436 hp / 325 kW). It also modifies the throttle response to be sharper and adds a new drive mode called Sport to the on-board electronics. Only dual-motor Volvos are supported. In some countries, the package is only available with a new car; in others, it can be installed over-the-air on the last-model-year cars.
As for the Black Edition package, it brings along the same look as the XC60 Black Edition. This includes an Onyx Black exterior, darkened trim and décor all around, and special 20-inch wheels.
The company emphasizes its intention to go full-electric by the beginning of the next decade. EVs only amounted to 16% in Volvo’s total sales last year, but that was still 70% better than in 2022. Later this year, the carmaker promises us a few new EV premieres.
