Nissan Z celebrates its predecessor’s birthday with a special edition
The Datsun 240Z, otherwise known as the Nissan Fairlady Z, is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the Japanese automaker has announced the Heritage Edition of the modern Nissan Z. It’s purely cosmetic and doesn’t cost much more than the base trim.
Unlike the Fairlady Z Customized Edition that was released in Japan last year, the Heritage Edition targets the U.S. market. The production quantity and availability date remain unannounced, but the dealerships expect the first cars to arrive very soon. Prices start just below $60,000 – that’s a $6,200 premium over the standard Nissan Z with the same options selected.
Compared to the base trim, the limited edition sports a two-piece front grille and comes finished in a rare shade of orange with black accents, just like its predecessor did in 1969. It rides on 19-inch black wheels, sports moderate fender flares, and has anniversary badges all around.
Things stay stock under the hood. In the case of the Z, it implies a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-banger rated at 405 PS (400 hp / 299 kW) and 475 Nm (350 lb-ft) of torque. You can choose between six-speed manual and nine-speed automatic for the transmission, but rear-wheel drive has no alternatives. Like the standard edition, Heritage can be optioned with a limited-slip differential and performance brakes with red calipers.
