1 of 80 hardcore Dodge Dart dragsters from the ‘60s fails to sell
An exotic 1968 Dodge Dart L023 Super Stock produced by the U.S. automaker for NHRA drag racing championships went up on sale last weekend, but no one was tempted.
Only 80 such vehicles rolled off the assembly line, each equipped with a huge seven-liter Hemi V8 not normally available for the Dart. Hurt Performance raised the output of every such engine to a claimed 426 PS (420 hp / 313 kW), but rumors said the actual output exceeded 507 PS (500 hp / 373 kW).
The same aftermarket specialist assisted Dodge in mounting the bulky block onto the fairly compact Dart coupe and fine-tuning it. The default transmission was four-speed manual, but the example seen here was ordered with a three-speed automatic.
Among other things, the L023 Super Stock series featured a lightweight glass-fiber plastic body, ultrawide rear tires, thinner glass all around and an ascetic interior. The rear bench, the radio, the noise proofing, the power windows and the heater were all deleted and basic seats installed where comfortable ones used to be. Dodge even went as far as to dismantle the dashboard and strip the unnecessary parts. As a result, the car weighed around 1.3 tons (2,866 lbs).
Depending on how precisely they nailed the launch, racers were able to run a quarter-mile in this car in 9 to 11 seconds. It is unknown how many examples of the Dart L023 Super Stock survive to this day. The seller pointed out that the car on sale still had its OEM units and components complete with serial numbers.
