Hennessey takes a reputation hit after an allegedly staged drag race
We’ve been getting enough biased quarter-mile comparisons from Hennessey Performance lately, but this video pitting the company’s 1,000-hp Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing up against a stock Audi RS 6 Avant really takes the cake.
For starters, there is a nearly 400-horsepower gap between the contenders. Hennessey’s “H1000” Blackwing looks like a beast on paper with 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 746 kW) and 1,300 Nm (959 lb-ft) of torque heading for the wheels. The stock RS 6 looks almost tame in comparison with its 630 PS (621 hp / 463 kW) and 900 Nm (662 lb-ft).
But that’s where thing turn around for the Cadillac. The Audi benefits from AWD and launch control, allowing the driver to nail the start in the manufacturer-rated 3.3 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph). You can find numerous videos with enthusiasts launching it in as little as 3.1 seconds.
But once under the baleful influence of Hennessey, the Audi miraculously loses its grip on the basics and completely fumbles the start. Even so, it manages to more or less keep up with its 1,000-hp rival. In the ensuing rolling race from 80 km/h (50 mph), the Audi actually manages to decrease the gap towards the end despite being larger and heavier than the Cadillac.
As you’d expect, the commenters on YouTube caught on the foul play and called Hennessey out. One said the RS 6 looked like it was starting from third or fourth gear. Others pointed out that the video did a better job highlighting how little the tuning had accomplished for the Blackwing.
