This South African Mustang is actually a BMW M3 in disguise
Someone converted a BMW E92 M3 into a lookalike of the classic 1969 Ford Mustang and is selling the result in South Africa for the equivalent of U.S. $81,000. You could buy a couple of well-preserved E92 M3 models for that kind of money, or even a 1969 Mustang, but you’d be missing on exclusivity value.
The scope of work is fairly impressive. Most body panels have been replaced with completely new ones, and whoever did the job took care to keep the proportions close to the original. They finished the body in royal blue, put silver wheels into the arches, and dropped the ride height for a sportier look.
Some work has been done in the cabin as well. Our favorites include a new three-spoke steering wheel with a wooden rim and a vintage dashboard, but there are other nice retro touches as well. At the same time, the car offers modern creature comforts like HVAC.
A look under the hood reveals a standard 4.0-liter non-turbo V8 coupled with the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. It has 3,745 km (2,327 miles) on it, although it’s unknown whether that’s the total mileage or just post-restoration.
When we first saw the ad on South Africa’s Cars, the Mustang replica cost the equivalent of U.S. $104,000. It looks like the seller is willing to make a big discount, although $81,000 still sounds like plenty for a conversion of this kind.
