Porsche 904 with rumored Stars Wars connection set to sell for $2.2M
A 1964 Porsche 904 GTS rumored to have once belonged to famous Star Wars film director George Lucas will be sold at a private auction soon. Being one out of only 108 such cars in existence, it is speculated to be worth U.S. $1.8–2.2 million.
The German sports car maker designed the 904 GTS lineup to be competitive in GT racing but at the same time street-legal. Every example was based on a stainless-steel chassis and a glass-fiber plastic body. A purpose-built 1.5-liter engine sent up to 180 PS (178 hp / 132 kW) to the wheels.
In 1964 and 1965, these cars scored victories at the Spa Francorchamps, Sebring, Le-Mans and Nürburgring, as well as at Targa Florio and a number of challenging rally raids, such as the Monte Carlo.
This particular example was commissioned by a customer in California. It proceeded to take part in a number of U.S. racing series, including the SCCA and the USRRC. Having changed multiple owners, it traveled from the United States all the way to Japan and back. It had its engine swapped to the latest Porsche 911 engine back in 1970, but was later retrofitted with a rare Typ 587/3 powertrain. Porsche put this 2.0-liter unit in some 904 models made exclusively for the racetrack.
The auction holder claims the vehicle is in fairly good condition with what amounts to an almost completely transparent record going back to the year of manufacture.
