VW Golf R gets mild updates across the board
Volkswagen has facelifted the Golf R for the next model year.
The old 2.0-liter TSI engine received a boost from its original 320 to 333 PS (from 316 to 328 hp; from 235 to 245 kW). The hot hatch now ships bundled with a seven-speed DSG transmission, all-wheel-drive and torque vectoring, and can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds. An optional package called Performance lifts the speed cap from 250 to 270 km/h (from 155 to 167 mph).
Manual transmission is gone for good, but you can still choose from two body styles. Both sport updated bumpers and aerodynamic parts. A thin light stripe between the headlights is accompanied by an illuminated VW badge. The exhaust system culminates in four tailpipes and features a revised sound profile. An Akrapovic titanium exhaust is available to those interested.
Wheels come in 18-inch and 19-inch sizes, with a premium option in the form of 19-inch Warmenau forged rims. These weigh as little as 8 kilos (17.6 lbs), meaning weight savings of 20% over standard rims. Furthermore, Volkswagen claims their open design improves brake cooling.
Elsewhere, the new Golf R benefits from IQ.Light matrix LED headlights and a black-out trim package for the exterior. A peek into the cabin reveals an infotainment display enlarged to 12.9 inches of diagonal size. The system takes advantage of a next-gen voice assistant powered by ChatGPT. The digital dashboard has a few optional gauges, such as a G-sensor and a lap timer.
