In 2023, UK-based startup Nyobolt announced an innovative approach to car battery charging that should have let EVs with smaller packs to reach 100% in under six minutes. The company has now conducted real-life tests of the tech and shared the details.
To prove the concept, the engineers took a Lotus Elise and redesigned it into an electric sports car known as the Nyobolt EV. It was then discharged to 10% of the capacity and recharged back to 80% in 4 minutes 37 seconds. A 350-kW, 800-volt source was used for the test. The 100% charging time was not disclosed.
According to the company, the battery has already passed 4,000 rapid charge/discharge cycles and still managed to stay above 80% of its original capacity. Crucially, it means that all track day enthusiasts who would like to go all-electric would not have to worry about wearing out their battery – at least, as long as it is a relatively small 35-kW pack charged the way Nyobolt has been working on.
