Next-gen BMW M5 fully revealed
The new BMW M5 sedan is here for us to look at and examine the specs, but the shipments will not begin until November. The Touring version is expected to debut around the same time in late fall.
The 4.4-liter V8 now delivers 585 PS (577 hp / 430 kW) to all four wheels along with 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. An electric motor built into the eight-speed automatic transmission supplies an extra 197 PS (194 hp / 145 kW). Its nominal torque amounts to 280 Nm (207 lb-ft), but a special reduction gear installed at the gearbox entrance ramps it up to a cool 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).
As a result, the car sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds. The top speed is capped at the usual 250 km/h (155 mph), but you can have it lifted to 305 km/h (189.5 mph) with a paid unlock.
As you may have noticed, the new M5 isn’t exactly more agile than its predecessor – in fact, it’s a little slower. That’s because it tips the scales close to two and a half metric tons (5,500 lbs). Its 18.6-kWh battery pack gives it up to 69 km (43 miles) of electric mode with the speed capped at 140 km/h (87 mph). The all-wheel-drive system has an active rear differential and supports mode selection. Among other things, you can temporarily disable all stability control systems and/or decouple the front axle.
