Bugatti shares details about designing the Tourbillon
As it turns out, the French hypercar manufacturer had originally planned to power the Tourbillon from its time-proven W16, minus the turbos. Why did they decide to develop a whole new engine instead? CEO Mate Rimac has the answer.
Apparently, Rimac asked engine experts from Cosworth, which cooperated with the company on the project, whether it would make sense to leave the W16 under the hood, de-boost it and up the RPM counts to compensate.
However, the Cosworth engineering team criticized this idea, saying that the W16 block simply didn’t have the proper layout for a high-revving, naturally aspirated engine. The only way to keep it in the Tourbillon was to keep the turbos running, which Rimac was adamantly against. As a result, the company wound up developing a whole new 16-cylinder mill with a more traditional V-shaped cylinder arrangement.
