At the Canadian Grand Prix stage of Formula One that opened last weekend, a quartet of Red Bull Racing stars took part in an unusual and fun competition not unlike the legendary Soapbox Race.
The team had built a track specifically for the race, making sure to include multiple bends and obstacles. These included a mound of soap foam and two small ramps. The drivers were supposed to receive an initial push from their assistants and then steer their motorless cars down the slope. In keeping with the theme, the cars were styled after Red Bull cans.
Max Verstappen and Sergio Peres were competing against Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo. One of the drivers sat in the car while the other one gave it the initial push, so the result depended on teamwork to a certain degree.
The qualification rounds saw Verstappen and Ricciardo win in their respective runs. Yuki Tsunoda, the least tall of the four competitors, ranked last due to a poor launch. Ricciardo reacted a bit late when pushing the car, losing his team the run and the whole race.
Verstappen has won gold – not just in the Soapbox Race, but the Canadian Grand Prix as well.
