The designers of the McMurtry Speirling one-seater have posted a video with their 3.5-meter (11.5-ft.) car setting an absolute lap record at the Hockenheimring in the Closed Wheels category. It came 14 seconds ahead of the latest Mercedes-AMG One and even surpassed some DTM racecars.
Piloted by ex-F1 driver Max Chilton, the Speirling was able to complete a lap of the legendary German circuit in 1 minute 24.4 seconds. That’s 3.9 seconds faster than the best time shown by a pure DTM racecar back in 2020.
The British automaker specifically points out that the car hit the track with some serious technical handicaps, capped at only 75% of its nominal power output and restricted in terms of active aerodynamic performance. The reason is that it is still in development and has a prototype status, so certain tweaks had to be done for safety reasons.
Tipping the scales at under one metric ton (2,200 lbs), the McMurtry Speirling outputs approximately 1,000 horsepower (750 kilowatts) to the rear wheels. The specific numbers are pending. A 60-kWh battery pack with rapid charging support is supposed to be enough for 10 Silverstone laps in pedal-to-the-metal mode.
Once the testing phase is over, the tiny one-seater will go into production limited to 100 units worldwide. It will be available to all private buyers, but they will have to stomach the £895,000 (U.S. $1,130,000) starting price.
