Subaru has come up with a particularly extreme WRX build for this year’s Goodwood race. Banked as the marque’s fastest WRX in history, the Project Midnight features a full-carbon body and an engine that can rev up to 9,500 RPM.
A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mill delivers a staggering 679 PS (670 hp / 500 kW) to all four wheels. That’s impressive as it is, and even more so when you consider that the whole car weighs just 1,120 kilos (2,470 lbs). Compared to the production-issue WRX (see video), that’s around half a metric ton (1,100 lbs) less.
rue to its name, the Project Midnight is completely black top to bottom. It wears an elaborate body kit with a large rear wing being arguably the most eye-catching detail.
18-inch wheels shod in slick tires guarantee maximum grip for the upcoming hill climb race. The suspension has also been tweaked to maximize traction, something that Subaru says was surprisingly hard to do because of how lightweight the car is.
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed starting later today, the sports car will attempt to set new records across multiple categories. If we are lucky, the company will also reveal some of its technical specs and announce a limited edition (it looks like a one-off so far).
