Ford Europe has unveiled a new electric vehicle rebadged from Volkswagen. It is called Capri in reference to an affordable sports car that was once known as Europe’s Mustang, but rides on the same Volkswagen Group platform as the latest Ford Explorer.
Unlike the Explorer, the new Capri features a coupe-like body and is marketed as a sportier alternative to the former. It will soon go into production in Köln, Germany and will start from €51,950.
The vehicle is 4,634 mm (181 inches) long, 1,946 mm (76 in) wide and 1,626 mm (63.5 in) tall with 2,767 mm (108.1 in) between the axles. The trunk size varies from 622 to 1,510 liters (22 to 53.3 cubic feet) with 17 liters (0.6 cu.ft.) of other storage space in the cabin. Wheels come in sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches.
In its cheapest form, the Ford Capri EV relies on a single electric motor at the rear axle to propel it with 286 PS (282 hp / 210 kW) and 545 Nm (402 lb-ft). The flagship spec adds a front-axle motor for a combined output of 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW). The respective sprint times are 6.4 and 5.3 seconds, and the top speed is capped at 180 km/h (112 mph).
The RWD version of the car gets a 77-kWh battery pack and up to 627 km (390 miles) of driving range in Europe. The AWD version gets a slightly larger 79-kWh battery, but only 592 km (368 miles). Charging from 10 to 80 percent will take less than 30 minutes, the company claims.
Trim-wise, the new Capri starts with a 14.6-inch display, a two-zone climate control system, and a driver’s seat with 12-way seat adjustments and a built-in massage function. It also gets a plethora of driving aids.
